Sandia Crest
Elevation 10678'
The Sandia Mountains are located east of Albuquerque New Mexico. The range resembles a long ridge, with the highest point located at Sandia Crest (elevation 10,678’). The summit views are impressive. It’s possible to drive near the summit, or there are also numerous trails to explore in the area.
Michael had come up with a great itinerary for our New Mexico & Texas peak bagging trip. After flying from Boise to Albuquerque in the morning, we had some time for a short hike before driving south, and Michael chose Sandia Crest due to its over 4k’ of prominence.
Instead of driving to the highest parking lot, we parked at the Ellis trailhead to make the hike a little more sporting. It had been a good snow year, and the trails were still covered. But we followed our noses through the forest and eventually up to the high point.
The views were great, but we didn’t stay long due to windy conditions. On the way back down, we followed the crest for a while before descending back to the car. Round trip was just under 2 miles and 500’ elevation gain in a leisurely hour and fifteen minutes. Next up, we would drive south to the Guadalupe Mountains.
