Kuna Butte is located in the Owyhee Desert, just south of the town of Kuna. It makes for a nice hike and just a short drive to get there. This area is hot during summer, but makes for a quick getaway in the cooler months. With a few different 4WD roads crisscrossing the area, it doesn't exactly have a wilderness feel, but it still offers some good scenery looking out across the valley.
I was looking for a quick afternoon hike to cure my cabin fever, and was able to convince my sons to join me for a hike up Kuna Butte after sweetening the deal by offering to stop for ice cream on the way home. After a short 25 minute drive, we reached the trailhead on the north side of Kuna Butte and started making our way up a jeep road leading to the summit. It was only about a mile and 300 feet of gain to reach the summit, and we took a leisurely pace enjoying the weather on a nice Spring day. The views were nice from the summit, and we even did some exploring along the ridge west of the summit before heading down. On the way home, I held up my end of the deal with a quick stop for an ice cream cone at the Arctic Circle in Kuna.
