Red Devil Mountain Loop
Red Devil Mountain is located in the foothills of central Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains, near the town of Hailey. Red Devil doesn’t have enough prominence to qualify as an official peak, but there are two other peaks nearby that do, and the three can be combined together into one loop. Several trails in the area make for lots of options to experience nature and get in a good workout.

My son and a friend were heading to Hailey for a school project about the Trailing of the Sheep, so I tagged along for some hiking. They dropped me off at Old Cutters Park, and soon enough I was heading up the next gully south of Hangman's Gulch.

The gully offered good views looking back on Carbonate Mountain, and Hailey below.

There were various trails in the area, but I elected to stay on the more faint gravel trail heading up the gully. Soon enough, East Red Devil Mountain came into view, with Point 6660' on the right.

After some huffing and puffing up the trail to Point 6660', the connecting ridge to East Red Devil looked like no problem.

Looking down on Hailey from the summit of East Red Devil.

From East Red Devil, I could see the mostly cross-country route leading to North Red Devil, shown here in the near distance.

After some ups and downs, North Red Devil was getting closer.

The crux of North Red Devil was some zigzagging though sagebrush. From the summit, I had a view back on East Red Devil (left) and the ridge leading to Red Devil Mountain (right).

After backtracking a bit, next I tackled the ridge leading toward Red Devil Mountain. This is a view from the highpoint of the ridge, Point 6696', looking southwest toward Red Devil Mountain, at the end of the ridge.

Red Devil Mountain offers good views of Della Mountain and Carbonate Mountain, above Hailey.

Here's a final look back on Red Devil after making a steep descent on a use trail on the southwest side of the mountain.

Map of my route. Around 6 miles and 2500' elevation gain round trip, in 3 hours of hiking. I went counter clockwise.
