A nice snowshoe outing in the northern White Clouds

Unofficially named Holman Peak is located on the northern edge of central Idaho’s White Cloud Mountains. It rises above Holman Creek, not far from the Salmon River. There’s a trail leading up Holman Creek, and the peak is close enough to the highway to allow year-round access. The summit itself isn’t particularly striking, but it does provide a good view of Railroad Ridge, and some of the northern White Clouds Peaks.

After a 3 hour drive from Boise, a low snow year allowed us to pull into the driveway for Holman Creek Campground. This little peak had been on my snowshoe wish list for years, with winter parking being my main hesitation. Turns out there's a plowed spot a quarter mile east of the campground too.

From the campground, we headed southwest toward a low saddle just off the peak's northwest ridge. From the saddle, we had a good view of the peak and the basin below. We then contoured along the hillside for awhile as we approached the peak.

Lots of game activity in the area, and this was the largest of several groups of deer and elk we saw.

The grade steepened as we passed 6600', here's Michael making his way up with the basin behind him. We were fortunate to have crusty snow contions for at least part of the climb.

I was hoping we may have some good views from the upper ridgeline. Sure enough we had a good vantage point to see Railroad Ridge, Chinese Wall, White Cloud Peak #3, etc. Notice the grass and rocks visible through the snow on the wind scoured ridge.

The mighty summit of Holman Peak came into view as we rounded the ridgeline.

Here we are on the summit. It was a few degrees below zero at the start of the day, but fortunately it was sunny and not much wind. Couldn’t ask for better.

A PB&J is always a great way to celebrate a summit, Railroad Ridge in the background.

We decided to descend the north ridge on the way back to make a loop. It was shadier with more powdery snow. It was also cold in the shade, so no fingers out for photos until we found a sunny spot. From here, you can see that after a couple of weeks without new snow, the area was heavily tracked up by deer and elk.

Once back in the valley, we hiked down along Holman Creek. Here's a final look back at Holman Peak. Many thanks to Michael for indulging me on this winter White Cloud adventure.

Map of our route. Just over 4 miles and 1900' elevation gain round trip, in 5 hours of hiking. Not bad for a Thursday!
