Della Mountain
A quick hike in the Smoky Mountains near Hailey
September 12, 2024
Della Mountain (6,776') - Southwest Della Mountain (6,725')

Della Mountain is located on the eastern edge of central Idaho’s Smoky Mountains, rising above the town of Hailey. The antenna clad summit provides a commanding view the valley below. There is a steep road leading to the summit, that provides for a great workout. And if you start from Colorado Gulch road to the southwest, you can also climb Peak 6725’ (Southwest Della Mtn) along the way.

I'd been looking for a shortish evening hike after some storms passed through, and Della seemed like a good option. High clearance recommended for Colorado Gulch road, which takes you to this point, a jeep trail leading northeast up the peaks.

The hiking was steep right off the bat, and didn’t let up much until the summit of Peak 6725'. Here’s a view of Della from the first peak.

Kelly Mountain is visible to the northwest, above the Croy Creek drainage. But I still had some ground to cover. So after a short rest, I headed down toward Della. The road was steep going down to the saddle, and just as steep climbing up to Della.

The summit of Della Mountain gives a commanding position high above Hailey.

Here's a views from Della looking back at "Southwest Della".

After descending Della, then reclimbing "Southeast Della", the car was a welcome sight after a good calf workout!

Map of my route. Just over 3 miles and 1600' elevation gain round trip, in just under 90 minutes of hiking.
