Table Rock
Elevation 3,658'
Table Rock is located on the edge of the Boise foothills, and is one of the most popular hikes in the area. Home to the famous cross that lights the night, it’s great for a workout and great views of the city. In spite of living in the area most of my life, I’d never actually done the hike up the trail from the Old Idaho Penitentiary. But my son and some of his friends were embarking on a ‘high adventure’ backpacking trip later in the summer, and Table Rock was chosen to help test out the boys’ gear and endurance.
We made our way across town to the trailhead in east Boise. Even at 7pm, it was still 90 degrees. We headed up the trail, along with maybe 100 other hikers, and found the workout we were looking for. All the boys made it up without incident, and we spent some time on top enjoying the views.
Round trip was just over 3 miles and 800’ of elevation gain round trip, in 90 minutes of hiking. We made it back to the trailhead, sweaty, but proud of our accomplishment, and ready for ice cream!
