The Ramp & Double U Mountain
The Ramp is an 11,000 foot peak located on the southeast edge of central Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains. It’s one of the most easily climbed 11ers in the Pioneers, and can also be combined with nearby “Double U Mountain” for a good two-peak day. The shortest hiking approach is via Antelope Pass, which is almost 9000’ elevation and can be reached via high clearance vehicle.
After a 4+ hour drive from Boise, I parked at Antelope Pass the night before and slept in the back of my SUV. Smoke was a concern, but when I awoke the next morning, it wasn’t too bad, so I hit the trail just after 7am.
From Antelope Pass, I followed a trail that skirted the north side of a low knob, and briefly crossed paths with a herd of Pronghorn, before heading up the ridge. There were game trails to follow most of the way up. I set a steady pace and made it to the summit of The Ramp in just over 2 hours. Smoke obscured the views of distant mountains, but I could make out Smiley Mountain to the south, and “Double U” just to the northwest.
From The Ramp, I descended to the northwest, with good views of the Lake Creek drainage on the way down. Then it was a quick climb up Double U. On the summit I found a large cairn, and was able to locate Rick B’s film canister. He suggested the name “Double U” due to the two glacially formed U-shaped valleys at the head of Anderson Canyon.
After a snack break on Double U, I retraced my path back to The Ramp, and then back down the ridge to Antelope Pass. It was a nice day to be out in the mountains. Round trip was just over 10 miles and 4100’ elevation gain in just under 6 hours round trip.
