Shares Snout is located in the Owyhee Mountains of southwest Idaho. The rocky summit is accessible via a short hike from Coyote Grade Road, not too far south of Marsing. Spring or fall are good times to visit when the weather is mild. The approach hike is short, and culminates with some fun class 3 scrambling to reach the summit.

When my youngest son mentioned he wanted to go do a hike with some rock scrambling, he didn’t have to ask me twice. After asking around about good scrambles close to home, with a short hike, Shares Snout rose to the top of the list.

We made the hour drive from Boise to the trailhead, and began heading south across the sagebrush. It wasn’t long before we made it to some rocky outcroppings east of the summit, and my son went up and down a few different lines before we made it to the ridgeline. After a short walk along the northeast ridge, it was time for the final scramble up to the pointy summit.

Once on top, we hung out for a while taking photos and enjoying the view. To make things interesting, we decided to descend a different route and make a loop back to the car. So after some more scrambling on our way down the north side of the peak, we headed west along the ridge, then followed a jeep trail back to Coyote Grade Road, and eventually back to the car. Round trip for the loop was 2 miles and 800 feet of elevation gain. A fun afternoon indeed.
