Cervidae Peak is located in the Boise Mountains, just north of the Lucky Peak Reservoir. It’s a quick and steep climb that is very popular workout since it’s a short 20-minute drive from Boise. Springtime is probably the ideal time to climb, but folks climb Cervidae Peak pretty much any time year round.
For the past few years, Splattski has been putting together a yearly New Years Eve group climb of Cervidae. This was the first year that I’d been able to attend, and it was a great time. Most years, snowshoes have been required, and one year it was basically a blizzard. But the lack of snow so far this winter made for easy going. At 6pm, the group met at the “trailhead” for what has become Cervidae’s most popular route up the southeast ridge. The group was made up of quite a few familiar faces and names, and some new ones too. Pretty soon there were 20 of us. Soon we were making our way up the trail, headlamps ablaze. Some set a quick pace, others held back, and the rest of us were somewhere in between. It was a beautiful clear night with almost no wind. Great hiking conditions for sure.
Once on the summit, we bundled up for some beverages and low light picture taking. Splattski did his namesake summit shot, with 18 of us on the highpoint at one time. Then we headed down. Afterwards, several us drove up the road to the Duffy Pub and were treated to a great impromptu jam session. Good times for sure.
