Graham Peak is located in southcentral Idaho’s Albion Range, just north of the City of Rocks National Preserve. It’s possible to climb the peak directly from the City of Rocks, or a shorter hike via the road from the northwest. If doing the shorter option, it is possible to form a loop from Graham Peak to Stines Peak via Stines Pass, and then back to the trailhead. The connecting ridge between the two peaks forms the ridgeline that is the west backdrop above Castle Rocks State Park.

After a nice hike to Cache Peak earlier in the day, I drove south and parked near the start of NF road 707. (Point elevation 8387’ on the topo map.) The hike up the jeep trail to Graham was only a mile and a half. Views from the summit of Graham looking down on the City of Rocks were excellent. In your face views of Cache Peak to the north were also impressive.

From Graham Peak, I headed cross-country following the ridgeline north. It was open terrain with abundant wildflowers and great views. This section of ridge was the best part of the hike for sure. Eventually I dropped into the trees for a while, and then followed a fence line down to Stines Pass, where the forest cleared again.

Next up was the final climb from Stines Pass up to “Stines Peak” (Peak 8770’). There was a bit of talus and boulder hopping to deal with, but nothing too bad. Once on top, the views continued to be great, with nearby Cache Peak dominating the scene.

After taking in the views from Stines Peak, I descended back to the pass, and then followed another jeep trail back to the car. The final section was very nice, including some impressive aspen groves.

Round trip for the two peaks was just over six miles and 1200’ of elevation gain in 2.5 hours. A great afternoon in the mountains.
