Radio Hill
Elevation 3939'
Radio Hill is located in northern California, near Quincy, right on the edge of town. Originally home to a fire lookout, it now houses various communication equipment. It is right next to the local high school, and boasts a large “Q” in big white rocks for town pride.
We were headed to Lassen National Park the next day, and had done an eight-hour drive from Boise. We made it to our motel in Quincy, and I was looking for a place to stretch my legs. I found Radio Hill on Lists of John, and set out.
I pulled into a parking lot at the bottom of Radio Hill Road, and started walking the paved road. After a short distance, there was a dirt road heading steeply uphill. I followed that, and then a couple other roads, before reaching the summit. It was a nice woodsy setting, but the sound of cars on the local racetrack nearby reminded me I wasn’t far from civilization.
The highpoint was adorned a few buildings and radio equipment. I looked around briefly, then retraced my path back to the car. Round trip was a leisurely 30 minutes, covering just over a mile and 350’ of elevation gain round trip. All in all, a pretty good way to stretch my legs.
