Taylor Mountain is located in the Little Lost River Valley in eastern Idaho. It’s a small peak with great views, thanks to its central position midway between the Lemhi’s and the Lost River’s. With a group outing planned for Saturday in the Lemhi’s, we thought we’d try to squeeze in a local hike on Friday. Taylor was a game-time decision after arriving in the valley, and it seemed like a good choice since it would be a quick climb with some unique views.
After a minor mishap at the trailhead, overcome by some creative problem solving techniques that John learned from the bears in Yosemite, we were on our way. There were still a few patches of snow on the east facing slopes, but no major issues. We wandered up through the sagebrush, admiring the views of the Lemhi Range to the east, on our way up to the southeast ridge. From the ridge, we had great views of the backside of the Lost River Range. It was a new angle for us, and John and I did our best to identify the various peaks. The view changed a bit as we got higher, and we had to revise our line-up a couple times before coming to a final determination. I’m sure Steve was very impressed with our skill and expertise…
The summit views were fantastic, and the weather was mild, so we hung out for a while before heading down. Good times were had by all.
Our route was just over 3 miles round trip and 1600' elevation gain.
